Understanding NICEIC Regulations

Arkle Bros. (London) Ltd, carry out NICEIC Periodic Inspection Reports on all types of Commercial and Industrial Premises, including Churches, throughout London and Essex. This report will inform you of the condition of your electrical installation and any areas that do not meet current regulations. You will be issued a full report on any remedial works that maybe required to bring the installation to a ‘Satisfactory’ standard.

About the NICEIC Requirements

NICEIC acts as the electrical contracting industry’s independent voluntary regulatory body for electrical installation safety matters throughout the UK.  It maintains and publishes registers of electrical contractors that have been assessed against Scheme requirements, including the national electrical safety standard BS 7671, the IEE Wiring Regulations.

NICEIC is a trading name of NICEIC Group Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of and operates under licence from the Electrical Safety Council.

The registers NICEIC maintains and publishes include the national Roll of Approved Contractors (established in 1956), and the Register of Domestic Installers.  Since January 2005, Domestic Installers have been authorised to self-certify their domestic electrical installation work as compliant with the Building Regulations for England and Wales.

NICEIC provides a range of product certification activities focusing on portable, transportable and fixed electrical equipment covering the design, installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance of electrical installations in commercial, industrial and domestic environments.

The company employs more than 70 full-time assessing engineers and over 100 associate assessors across the UK that make regular visits to registered contractors assessing their technical capability and inspecting samples of their work.

There is a head office staff of more than 80 people including electrical engineers and professional support teams. NICEIC operate a technical helpline, which handles more than 30,000 calls per year, where contractors and specifiers can obtain practical advice and guidance.

BEWARE: NICEIC NEWS REPORT 2007 - See Below

(We are aware that fraudsters are operating in the Essex area.  They are issuing false certification documents.  Here is a timely reminder of the consequences of the penalties that are invoked.)

Installer prosecuted over misuse of logo

Successful prosecution sends out warning to cowboysBeware False Certification A tradesman who falsely claimed to be registered as an electrician with NICEIC has been ordered by Portsmouth Crown Court to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and pay compensation of £4037 together with prosecution costs of £1000.

Adrian Tony Leggatt, the proprietor of ATL Electrical Services, pleaded guilty to all 15 offences brought by Hampshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service under the Trade Descriptions Act 1968. Due to the serious nature of the offences, the case went to Portsmouth Crown Court for sentencing.

“NICEIC take complaints against the misuse of its logo extremely seriously, and this is a victory for the electrical industry and its professional standards,” said Jim Speirs, Chief Executive of NICEIC. “We will come down extremely hard on any bogus uses of the NICEIC logo on behalf homeowners who see it as a sign of quality and reassurance and to maintain the reputation of our genuine Approved Contractors and Domestic Installers.”

NICEIC is the UK’s leading electrical regulatory body and its registered installers are assessed every year by Area Engineers to ensure they meet specific technical standards.

“Complaints made against businesses who falsely claim membership of organisations such as NICEIC which operate strictly controlled Schemes concerned with public safety will always be thoroughly investigated by the Trading Standards Service of Hampshire County Council in keeping with the corporate priorities of the Authority,” commented Ray Matthews, Principal Trading Standard Officer for Hampshire County Council.

Do your research if you’re planning on getting electrical work carried out in your home. Homeowners can find out if an electrician is a member of NICEIC by checking on www.niceicgroup.com or calling 0870 013 0382.

Arkle Bros Guarantee

All Electrical Installation works, completed by us, are covered by a written guarantee that the installation complies with all relevant regulations.  For new installations be careful not to employ an unqualified electrician, and then apply for certification.  Regulations clearly state that new installation certificates can only be issued if the work has been carried out in accordance with the regulations i.e. in other words testing is not sufficient, it is also necessary to inspect the work that has been carried out - which can prove very costly, as wiring may be enclosed, hidden away or involve removing skirtings, floorboards etc.

We also issue the relevant NICEIC Certification on all electrical works completed by ourselves where necessary.
